Sites to review for appearance:

www.bah.com - Booz Allen Hamilton

They are a management consulting company.  What I like about this site includes logo in upper left, menu bar, block header graphic on first page (with high tech feel) that disappears on later pages to be replaced by smaller graphic, quick links on left, text area in center.

Simple layout.  Graphic (high tech) at top.  Expanding menu bar on left.  Large text area.

www.kpmg.com

High tech banner, bar around menu at left, images to go with menu items on home page

www.resolns.com

Nice banner at top, left hand menu, title/text/more button in box to separate items on home page, right direct jump to freebie and contact info collection (also boxed), different layout at bottom (image and box with arrow – like both of those)

http://www.progress.com/

This site has the menu at the top, then the banner image, then the text area with boxed sections and more buttons like I was mentioning.  If you go to Services>Overview you see the banner change (going away is ok with me) submenu items on left, text in the center, etc.

Also has the kind of boxed layout with images and a banner that disappears that I was talking about (jump to services architecture more information to see the banner change).  On the home page I’d kind of like the menu in the banner on the left instead.  It also has a nice “right side banner ad” that promotes white papers, services, etc. on secondary pages.

This was done for me once and I generally like the layout (although I am somewhat put off by the color scheme). I like the menu at the top and the submenu on the left (although I need to be able to edit these items without having to have graphic software to create new buttons or update text in images), I like the two places to put static text in the header (in the bar under the picture and in the block right of the picture) but again I need to be able to edit the HTML and change the text.  I don’t like the upper banner (never could get him to give me one I liked) but the middle one is ok and I like the way it disappears when you go to the 2nd page (click About).  I like the news and spotlight sections – I can change them when I change my specials and give the site a focus each month or quarter.  And I like the titles down the center that I can use to jump to different places (although I think I’d like small images and more buttons or box-arrow buttons better like you have at the bottom of resolns.com).  Just make sure I can edit all of the text on a page without needing Illustrator or something to change the .psd files (use a background image in a table so that I can change the overlay text).
